Vinyl Flooring For Decks - A Maintenance Free Option
Get an inside perspective from a deck builder's clients.
Vinyl flooring for decks is becoming more and more popular as an excellent
alternative to wood.
Durable vinyl flooring membrane also offers near zero maintenance solutions to homeowners. There are two main types of vinyl decking material and they are easily confused.
Vinyl Deck Flooring vs Composites?
The
first should really be properly referred to as composite
decking because its a combination of vinyl, PVC, other recyled
plastics and even wood.
It mimics the appearance, color and shape of decking lumber. You install this kind of decking practically the same way as a standard wood deck.
Vinyl Flooring For Decks
The
other vinyl decks that are very popular are those which are sheeted
with plywood over the joists and a vinyl waterproof flooring membrane
is laid over top.
It is secured with contact cement or flooring glue. Any seams are heat welded to create a clean water tight seal over the entire deck.
It's
soft, textured, comes in a variety of colors and thickness (usually measured
in mil) and withstands extreme hot and cold temperatures.
Forget ever having to stain your deck again! The best thicknesses for durability are a 40 mil vinyl. A 60 mil vinyl is also approved in the building codes for use over living spaces. What a great clean durable alternative to torched asphalt deck roofs.
So
when you're planning to build your deck, give some serious thought to using
the new vinyl flooring deck membrane available. Vinyl decks really add value
to your home and will eliminate a lot of upkeep.
