Rooftop Decks - The Perfect Perch for Relaxing
One of the most overlooked types of decks are rooftop decks. Yet, what better location is there to take advantage of wonderful views?
This rooftop deck you see here is a perfect example. I built the railings and deck on the rooftop of this boat house overlooking a beautiful Okanagan lake.
The I used 60 mil vinyl flooring membrane approved for use as a waterproof deck flooring over living spaces. No hot mopping of tar at 535 degrees.
There are, however, several ways to build rooftop decks that will last, are waterproof and will withstand severe weather.
I will explain each in detail for you so you have a good idea about with style of roof top construction is best for your home.
Building a Rooftop Deck
Remember that the roof has to be just as strong as the floor below it because people will be walking on it.
That means 2x8 or 2x10 joists spaced at 12" or 16" o.c. The sheating should be 3/4" tongue and groove material.
It also means that the top of the roof should be sloped at about 1/4" per linear foot to ensure proper drainage.

Just a last word of cautionary advice about rooftop decks. Built-up and torch-on roofs are not for do-it-yourselfers. There is just too much danger involved.
The only method that is potentially within the realm of an experienced builder is the vinyl membrane flooring. But even then, some manufacturers will not offer any guarantees unless experienced installers do the installation and perform the lap welds.
But I'll explain all of these techniques to you any way so that if you decide if roof top decks are an option for you, you are able to hire the most competent roofing contractor you can find.
