Installing Ledger Board With Non-Mechanical Flashing

Your editor of Ideas-For-Deck-Designs.com

There are various methods of installing ledger board to your house and some require more effort than others.

Whatever method you choose, the ledger board attachment points to your house are vulnerable areas for water ingress so you have to keep them dry.

If you follow that typical ledger board installation method of bolting directly to the floor rim joist, you can use a new deck waterproofing membrane to cover the wall and ledger thereby eliminating the need for mechanical flashing between the rim joist and the ledger.

This new product which seems to be a great idea is called Deck Protector.

Installing Ledger With Deck Protector

Deck flashing membrane

Attach your ledger board as you would but but before you secure the joist hangers wrap it or cover it with an adhesive durable 25 mil material and continue the coverage up the exterior wall ideally 8" to be safe.

This is most easily done before the exterior siding is applied. Then have the house wrap extend and overlap the rubber to ensure zero water penetration.

The same product comes in narrower strips and can also be used to cap the top edge of the joists so that standing water doesn't continually saturate the joists after every rainfall.

This product looks like a great idea as well as labor saving and money saving in the long run too. Check it out for further info.
