The best I can tell you is that I have looked long and hard at what is available and I think that for the average person you should either get the basic CAD type applications ($30 to $50 range) or a mid range application that has more design options for the home and landscape.

Consider getting one that offers a material list function or the Plan 3D online service which is very affordable but is more of a home and landscape application.

In this price range it is also good value. When you are talking about $30 or less for deck design software all of these entry level programs offer, it's hard to say no.
