A Composite Deck Material Review
With over 100 different composite deck material manufacturers and products now on the market, I figured it was definitely time to update as much as possible the composite deck material review of everything available.
If nothing else it will help you narrow down the right composite deck material for your upcoming backyard deck project. Start your review from any of the categories below.
Polyethelene Based Composite Decking
Polyethylene decking composites make up the largest share of the composite deck market.
They comprise wood or wood fiber blends with plastic. The plastics used can be entirely recycled. This is nice to know if treading lightly on the environment is important to you. But recycled plastics have different physical properties than virgin material. As a result some manufacturers choose to use a blend of recycled material or none at all
This results in a plastic lumber material that is slightly softer so may not span quite as far but is easy to work with and can have textured finishes applied to it. They are the most wood-like of the synthetic materials.
Polypropelene Based Composite Decking
Polypropylene is a hard, dense plastic that is quite stiff and lighter than many other composites. It can be extruded into hollow shapes which add further strength so it can span greater distances.
Non-Wood Plastic Decking
These are made entirely of plastic. They are completely synthetics and so they don't stain or mold as much as other materials but they usually look and feel more like plastic. Some are textured with wood grain effects.
There is a lot to choose from in the world of composite decking. Ultimately your choice will depend upon your budget.
If you plan to live in your home for at least 10 years you will get your money back out of your deck. If you are on a tight budget or don't plan to be in your home for more than 2-3 years, the upfront expense of composite decking materials won't pay off.
But the real dividends of the new composite decks and materials comes from how nice they look and zero maintenance. It's a powerful draw...
