In case you weren't aware, the building codes in the US and Canada call for a deck railing that can withstand minimum horizontal forces if the deck is more than a certain height above grade (usually 24" - but check your code to be sure!).
Did you know that many post anchors (the external kind that wrap around the outside of a post) can not withstand these horizontal load requirements on their own?
In order to meet the code these railings have to be configured so that no section of the railing is unsupported - not attached back to a wall.
