Deck From Ground Level (not shown diagonal floor board pattern with "picture frame" edge)
This DIY, homeowner-designed deck started out in a 3D graphics software in February of 2008.
Christy (first time deck builder) spent about about 3 months (of spare time) messing around with the design (changing the diagonals, the size, the shape, stair locations, and calculating the support construction).
The first holes were dug on June 21, 2008. Throughout summer it was our weekend project until September when our time was shuffled to other priorities. By September we had the floor down, stairs complete and about 1/2 the railings up.
This summer, beginning in early June, we started back up. Finished the railings and began the extended task of constructing the built in flower boxes and the other tiny busy work. We finished it all by the end of July.
The deck is constructed from Winchester Gray - Trex Composite Decking and Trex Designer Rail System. The decking boards are laid on a diagonal with a two board width mitered edge.
The mitered "picture frame" edge gives the finished look and ensures that when looking onto the deck from ground level, no "sawed" edges are visible.
The diagonal pattern and mitered edges are continued through the deck's four built-in flower boxes. The deck also highlights a semi-private wall, created by a pergola type support that features three floral hanging baskets to block some view of the adjacent street.
